Fight The Fantasy, a 2013 wine business/industry note

IMG_3775When, there’s always a ‘when’ attached to a ‘what’.  Why is that?  This is wine.  It’s supposed to be easy, fun, relaxed.  But no.  There’s such a mis-measurement with the wine industry.  It’s all fun, drinking, leisure.  Paid vacation.  Today’s a Friday, nothing calm about this shift.  And it’s only 11:11.  Everyone’s stressed; moving, spilling, reciting.  Am I complaining?  I guess, maybe, a little.  Threats associated with campaigns and sales, goals—  Yes, I get the reality, it’s a business, a job.  But, if I’m “selling fantasy”, and a “lifestyle”, then any wine industry management should cultivate a mood catapulting that.  Everyone sees barrels, vineyards, the tanks, wine being poured.  Even the spills on the counter have their certain romantic print.  Do consumers need to know this, about this conveniently contorted image?  They should, really.  For perspective.  It’s Human, wine.  It’s not about the elements facing everyone around you, in the industry, behind the scenes and what has to be done and put on a spreadsheet or one some goal scoreboard.  The wine… that’s what this is about.  It’s. About. The. Wine.  Well, that’s what one state of mind reads, then the other yells back, “It’s a business.”

Wait, I intrude, “Aren’t both obvious?”  When, was I supposed to realize either?  And, what does it matter?

A more fun and universal style and shape, step of SB that I’ve met of late. She delivers her tone quickly, with sped seduction, but not with tangential code– Loud letter of love. Bright and crisp tropical spins, but nothing expected or simplistic. Voracious and versatile in each pour and roar… Hovering around my senses like a cantaloupe and apricot frenzy climate. Playful and passionate, real and told avec chirping truths.

Her steps are soft but pronounced, ballet-esque and animated in delivered wildly in her self-sense. Victorian mode, kissed–

Vineyard walk this morning, more than needed.

IMG_0062The collection and meditation is not comparable, in any slightest consideration.  What it has me deliberating and considering for my story, for the collective narrative of my family and everything around me—  People ask me what I write about and if I write about wine and I answer yes but it’s more than wine I’m putting to page.  It’s each minuscule wind shoe, each cut cane on the ground, each color in the sky, the cloud patterns and shapes, art… my face being gently lipped by the ambient ballet, invisible but definitively tactile, a lover with me that I’ve always known there and she wants me to have more of such intersections….

Co-worker walks in and I share the photo with him.  He liked it, as I hoped, and we shared our love for the property.  That defines wine more than wine defines itself.  What I write about, wine but not— the air, the people and their stories, the dirt and rocks around the vine bases and my deductive thought cascade for going out there rather than just hurrying here to write.

Looking uphill, and sleeping plants, the cloud Cubism…. I’m in love.  With her.  All about her, grinning back at me, and in a whisper, “Aller de l’avant…”

Don’t Fight a Flight

IMG_5665You don’t have to like everything that’s poured for you, first.  And secondly, be open to everything.  Even the wines and/or varietals you’re thinking you may not take to.  That’s why they call it tasting.  And, be gracious to the person pouring.  Wine tasting is that glaring— wine, tasting.  Taste everything.  And if there’s something you don’t dig, be discrete about your affinity lack for that one-and-a-half ounce, or whatever-splash.  Fighting the flight isn’t merely telling the person on the other Side of the bar you’d rather taste something else or that you don’t want to do the SB, or the Chard, or the Pinot, or the-whatever.  What this note advocates is to try everything.

And, honestly, you don’t HAVE TO try everything on the flight, but I offer, “Why resist it?” Why not see if you’re wrong?  I love meeting people that want to act all wine expert-y and so eager to offer their opinion but then when the next wine’s to b e poured, a Merlot say, they’ll declare, “No… no, I don’t like Merlot.” How do you know?  I always want ask but being the one pouring I keep with the shut speaker and move to what they’d rather have.  Let them have their little wine comfort zone where they can be experts and so proficient and only test and taste the wines they wish.  They can fight-flight, but I won’t.  So yes, this jot is for industry people as well as visitor.

Fighting a flight is rejecting wine reality.  To know, you have to taste.  And to know, you have to intimately familiarize yourself with all types, styles, regions and blend.  What you like, yes, but even more crucially what you don’t like.. or think you don’t.

MOCK SOMM:  2015 Malbec – Farrow Ranch – Devil Proof Vineyards – Alexander Valley, Sonoma County

img_7638Where do I start with the latest Devil Proof dissemination…. First word I wrote the other night was “indescribable”.  And essentially it is.  But I’ll try, remembering not only that initial meteoric octave in the olfactory sway and romance of her smokey, leather-pulsed, and wildly rich tell and grip.  But then, everything after that…. I didn’t want to pair it with dinner, but I did, just from my inability to resist her, further, with the poetic molding of my senses to the way she posed in the glass— vampiric hue, simplified and prolix winks and suggestion.  Only letting self have a small kiss from bottle, to align with dish, then after consider the enrapturing apparition more closely.

Pouring full glass, spin, watch her motions, the wait driving me mad but the wait as well giving me time to think about my approach.  Last time I had Devil Proof, I was bewitched, smitten, interested beyond any other label interest I’ve logged.  First…. Immediate impact, a swarm of notes that I don’t know how to reconcile… I just sat there in my hotel room agog with what spoke to me… she, again… my smiling seraph, the woman encouraging me to not think so hard about the act of glass-tilt, not with this bottle, not with the ’15…. “Just let me sing to you.” She apprised.  Dark chocolate covered cherry scales and separated notes, a Coltrane tune that keeps me in my seat, listening, tasting, feeling.  More than with any other Malbec.

I’ve always seen Malbec as that varietal that so many winemakers want to say they’ve img_7639made.  “Oh, I did a single vineyard Malbec from Dry Creek…” My reaction is always, “Really.” Why actuate and release such an effort if the thesis isn’t clear, innovative?  With this ’15, even more than the last bottle I had, which I think may have been from 2013, has me closer—  Listening, writing, seeing it on every table if I could.  I sat in a helix of stratospheric interest, love, and a bit of anxiety.  Should I just be sipping this Cubist and ravishingly ideological bottle as I am, just sipping and scribbling?  Again she told me, “Stop.”

More into her roll and stroll, telling what she wished told, I noticed more prominence to the fruit, smoke, coy but kindly assertive vanilla, maybe a little illusory, ostensible lavender.  Becoming more an encircling atmosphere, presence.  This is where I found myself scribbling madly as I do when with a wine like this, which isn’t often, not in this intensity, extremity, poetic immensity.  Everything from the structure to the organization and mobile assembly of piquant punctuation… oh, there was just amour.  All geometries and equations, theses and declarative hits from her… I smiled with her, leaned my head slightly to look out the window at Sonoma County and herald the vineyard blocks for composing something like her.  More than ‘something’, but a deconstructive revelation, affirmation, aptly singing to me, right there, in that hotel room.  “Nothing can harm me.  She’s here.” I thought .  “We smile together, sip symphonically.”

First thought…

The Malbec from last night, just the wine I’d want to make. 06:30 now, coffee made, and I’m thinking of wine. Tempted to take it to work and share, but I don’t want to share even a droplet from that bottle. Will come home, or ‘hotel’, and see how she’s speaking. I don’t want much to change, if anything– texture, song, fruit-scape, that leathery light at sip’s start to non-end… can still taste her now. All shapes and geometries of her way–

My first thought, before anything in day ignites, is her.. wine. Art. A bottled gallery of emotion and effort, task and memory.

from this morning’s wined thousand–

IMG_7545

…re-echoing and punctuating what was in my head last night falling asleep on couch, thinking I was coming down with some cold or bug or something that would just love to slow a wild writer… No, I said… “Be more wild, be crazy.. edit less, just put it all to page.  Fearless isn’t even the word.  It’s lightyears past that.”

Love mornings.  Mornings like this, even with the stress and the excess containment of the hotel getting to a writer I’m composed with my composition, compositions, books approaching— me just a wine drinker who’s not afraid to write what he sips.  This morning accidentally spilled out that ’13 Santa Rita Hills Pinot I last night popped.  Did that accidentally this morning trying to clean up, pouring older unfinished bottles to drain.  Thought the Pinot was the Chard… “Shit.” I thought.  Oh well.  Have more to taste today.  Yesterday in the cave during event, feeling like a soldier behind sandbags and only having open bottles of ’14 Carneros Chardonnay to defend myself.  People yesterday, in cave and tasting room were unusually impatient, and somewhat aggressive.  One couple sneaking around the cave bar, behind me essentially, nearly shouting to me “We’re ready for our pour…” After sneaking around the Jericho wall of people in front of me I struggled to keep with and keep wine in their glass to pair with those holiday cookies.  So a morning like this morning is more than bloody necessitated.

IMG_7550

Would love to go down to TR now, taste through a couple, but… too early, and I’m not ready to tussle with fruit flies.  Not yet.  Just want to enjoy my session here and see what else the morning teaches me… be wild, defiant.  But how.  What can I do?  I’m in an office.  Should I go write in the vineyard?  Is that what the morning wants me to do?  I think it might.  I can write about the vineyard as I often do… or write IN them, all of them, in the Cabernet lot at hill’s top, or that hidden PV block overlooking that little valley behind the property.  Be around wine, be wild, be in the vineyard and be part of it more than anything in the tasting room, or some bloody cave bar.  Seeing the gem stash in writing madly… have to get out to the vineyard.. but have to use the restroom first… drat.  What do I do.  Time escaping me.  No.. fuck time.  I have to get out to the vineyard.

Cold out here, in car, the silence is not off putting as much as it is unexpectedly eclectic.  Everything from the frost on the ground to the angle at which the sun dashes through the leaves… I’m part of what’s out here now and what used to be out here.  It’s strange but it’s what’s always been my story and been destined to be my story.  I remember right after Jackie was born, over five years ago, I worked a day at St. Francis Winery and walked the vineyard, wrote some verse, and just breathed out there with dormant vines all around me, thinking I need to do more with and for this, all this, every vine around me… more than just pouring wine in a tasting room.

Education.  This morning, the thought last night on the couch, this staying in a goddamn hotel for who knows how long now.  Life… wine…
