6:41AM

Went upstairs to help a bit with Emma and Jack, “Papa we’re good if you wanna go get more sleep.” Alice said.  “Sure, thanks.” I answered.  I thought walking down the stairs what the fuck that would do for me, getting more sleep.  Nothing.  It’s Tuesday, one of the more stressful days of the week as the timetable has to be very much adhered to with the weekly cleaning crew which we can barely afford coming by, me having to drive all the way up Dry Creek to Dutcher from Bennett Valley where Jack’s school is.  Now, on the couch in that conservatively dispersed bluish morning radiance.  Sitting crosslegged on the couch which I never do— Newness, right?  What I need.  And usually, I would have gone back to sleep.  But this morning the dire diarist voice about me prohibited such laydown, surrender.  Hear some bird, distant, calling for something.  The echoes of bird shouts seem clearer and more distinct, sharper or more metallic for some reason, I don’t know.  Balance this morning, between all my lives; roles, characters, voices and sights— the parenting parcel not tiring me, chipping away at my compositional composure as it has been the past few days.  Writerfathers need be relentless with their types – Writerfathers must NEVER let themselves tire, never let the self exhaust the Self or talk it into defeat – the writerfather need harness Self to a new focus, and assure that renewed Personhood that his goals will be touched and attained; sipped and upon reflected.

Just remembered I have some notes in the Passat which is being worked on at a shop up the Road from Jackie’s school— shit.  More added to the already compacted and impacted timetable, timeline, timehole.  So what now, what does the writerfather implement and employ for resolution?  Not sure.  I’ll think of something as I’m going, as the Story carries me with it and hopefully it’s kind and not aiming its goddamn cosmic cannon at me as it has been these past few days, or that other week (can’t remember precise dates as it was so taxing, getting lost in days like yesterday and one before).  Not at all being a protester with such notes, but disclosing Truth and what I see, did feel, and it can only be true, TRUTH, the story was testing me, making sure that I can do it— by ‘it’, the thousand words a day, the writing life, the traveling ahead of me.  Writerfathers would love to write 3000 words a day but for most of us that’s not logical, nor practical, just not doable.  A thousand words a day is humble, yet worth an applaud.  And I quietly clap in my head for my new Self this morning, flying straight to the keys and letting this Self have a moment.. thinking about yesterday’s sessions, the 1A especially how I’m always tired at that time and need coffee but yesterday composing, ready for discussion on Composition and writing, our lives on the page— teaching.  Took notes on the back side of the last page in my Comp Book, “What I Want” I wrote at top, underlined…  Of course, writing everywhere in the brainstorming, then teaching.. wine was only a secondary push, more or less a hobby I guess you’d say.  So, I thought more.. do I see myself lecturing or pouring, wiping down a counter and drying glasses?  Have to think more… of course, if it’s my winery, then I’m fine with all those things— and even if it’s someone else’s like Debra’s or Glenn’s, but… but…..  I have to think, storm more in my meditative arena.  Can’t answer too quick.  But wine is there, working FOR and under the writing.  The ’12 I finished last night from Pride didn’t have the fire I tasted the night prior, coming home from Mom and Dad’s.  Was like the wine was furious with me, not talking to me as I left it half-used that night.  Why did I do that?  ‘Cause I had to be up yesterday at 5:45 at the latest.  I had to be “responsible”.   You know, mature or whatever.  The ’12 didn’t care.  It was done talking to me.  I messed up.

7:01AM— my eyes on the time to avoid stress mirroring the last few days.  After this session, or crosslegged sitting I’ll brush teeth, maybe even get dressed, find what I can to wear as I haven’t been to the BV dry cleaners in weeks.  Now what the wife of this writingfather does is fold the pants just as they come from the dryer, bless her.  And it works.  Yes another expense I can remove and not have to dread.  Do I have money for coffee this morning, or am I using the CC for that?—  Just thoughts to myself, writing and budgeting and trying to plan.. bring everything to winery, work on your break, fuck eating, why eat, no writing gets done that way— “You can work and eat at the same time, right?” – NO.  Just work, grade papers so tomorrow morning when you get to campus you can write from about 6:30 to 7.  Then write more from about 9 to 11.  Think I have a “plan” or some paginated measure for the next 24 or so hours.  But what does the writing do when or and after it’s posted?  Just sit there on the blog and maybe get a handful of likes?  That’s bullshit!  I need to market each session autonomously, and angrily.

No noise coming from upstairs.  My estimate, Alice fell back asleep as did Em’ after her little meal, and little Kerouac enjoys his cartoons.  Peace, for now, but peace for writingfathers or any parents anywhere is volatile at best.  So I type toward a thousand, hold my breath, daydream and envision coffee in front of me with the spirit rising from the black puddle— love.  More me after I have that, the smoldering sensory envelopment— like Plath with her affirmation of ‘I am’, and Tolstoy telling me if I want to be happy then ‘be’.  I will be today.  And all calendar corners succeeding.

I’m whole and somehow holy after a thousand.

Today’s Thousand

I’m tired, eager for something to happen with the writing— part of me wants to just say ‘fuck office hours’, go home and take a nap.  But no I’ll stay here and take a break around word 500 and get some coffee.  More coffee.  Adjunct professor life is beginning to motivate me into a more deeply-doting case of the ‘fuckits’.  And why not, at my age.  More to grade, but it’s shorter assignments so not too bad.  Want to walk around campus, take a couple pictures, just capture the cold but clear morning out there, all the students at this halfway point in the semester, how they look, how many books they’re carrying, what they’re talking about— the other day I was in line to get a coffee, behind these two girls that kept talking about what kind of tea to get and I just stood behind them quietly and politely saying to myself “Hurry the fuck up, just pick one…” They did, then went to the coffee bar where I was to get my coffee after buying the medium cup, and they talked some more.  What I thought was somewhat useful for me as the observer was that they talked about school, their classes, getting tests back and how much longer they both had till they transferred.  I miss that, hearing from a school that I’m accepted into a program.  Last time I felt and experienced that was when living in San Ramon, being admitted into CSUEB’s English M.A.  Yes I keep thinking about the doctorate, but still…  I’d rather write.  Teach a little, but write.  WRITING.  WRITING will be my “job”…  That’s what I want Jack and Emma to see me doing— speaking of my “job”, I still have those poems to type.. the ones I wrote my last days in the Sanglier tasting room and the one I wrote yesterday at Dutcher.

Listening to the department admin talking to the other adjunct I share the cell with around this time of day, about San Diego and either applying to a school down there or teaching.  I think it’s for matriculation— and I think…..  I’m not ready to be a student again.  Just want to write.  Love the feel of this conference room this morning and me at this table, the upper part of the “T” that the two tables form.  A puzzle, two of them actually, on the table to my left, something the faculty members do touch-and-go’s on.  Pictures on the wall at my 12, none with me.  And why would there be.. I’m just an adjunct.  Need to go for that walk, just take pictures and write about the stills  I capture in my phone when I get back.. I’ll write in the cell, regardless if that other adjunct’s in there or not.  Nice lady, always says hello.  BUT…..  I need quiet.  Aloneness.  Solitary, like it’s my own cell, and I’m willingly imprisoned for sakes of my paragraphs streamings.  Then music overtakes the writer, sitting here at the T and going over what I lectured on this morning, on Argument, on that silly textbook I selected at the last minute, ‘everything’s an argument’.  Picked it at the last of last last-minutes, just to use something new.  I saw another professor was using it, so I thought “Huh, maybe I should too.” Glad I did, I guess.  Or indifferent.  But if everything’s an argument, what’s this writerfatheradjunct’s?  I guess that I’m done.  Done with safety.  Done with working.  Done with settling.  Time to chase the American Dream as Raoul did.  Just go for IT, the IT Sal and Dean sought.. music and travel, sharing stories with my babies when home from a trip, studying and being a book addict, running more, making wine, having everything.  Why can’t I have everything?

Who says you can’t?

Society.. it’s always said.. ‘you can’t do it all…..’

Don’t listen to them, then.  That argument isn’t for you.

Interesting.  Yeah… maybe it’s not.

Something’s already happening.  I don’t need to wait.  Much better place and mood than yesterday, that’s for sure.  Hate when I get like that, all cranky and self-defeating, and thinking of the NO rather than YES.. why do I do that?  I’m still learning, and as a writer trying to write through it, past it, but in it and from it.  Now I’m lecturing myself, and I guess that’s how I pull myself from funks.. or how I should continue to.  What do you do when in a mood?  How do you deal with it?  If you’re reading this, you’ll offer an idea.  And if no one’s reading then I’m meditating and talking with Self so either way I’ll walk away with something.

Back from walk.  Coffee at left.  Just met with student on rewrite.  Surprised anyone showed to the office hour, and right as it started no less.  Took one picture while walking to caf’ and back, took it just as I began steps down from this Emeritus floor.  Tired still but the coffee should help and I so much want to run, go to the gym and sprint on that treadmill.  Need to register for a ‘half’.  But which one.  Napa/Sonoma?  The Healdsburgs?  Rub eye again, other adjunct here in cell with me…  Odd silence while she packs her bag, either for class or to leave campus.  “Have a good one,” she says walking out.  “You have class, or…” I nose.  “Yeah…” “Have a good one,” I follow, returning to keyboard to trap our back-and-forth, meaningless as it is.  Don’t think it’s a symptom of fuck-it-itis, my current tone, but a breathing out, relief, soupçon of Zen.  Nice.  Lovely in fact.  Sip coffee… take poem from backpack… start typing.

8 lines.  Time for a break.  I think I’m lazy.. but I’m drinking coffee.  Whatthefuck.

Just noticed the other adjunct left the door open.  And I can hear a full-timer talking to a student, like they’re stupid of course.  Hate that.  Closing door.

Waking Up

9am.  Teaching tonight.  Staying with spirits positive.  Already graded a bit this morning.  Changing the way essays factor into grades, both 302 and 100.  Watching little Kerouac, so not much time for sentences.  Planning on 2pm coffee shop arrival.  Want all grading done by 3pm, for two hours of manuscript carving.  Still looking through old material, stretching back even to the San Ramon days, my work weeks in the insurance office.  Couldn’t imagine working in an office, anymore.  Less it was my envisioned office, with all the amenities needed for creative momentum.  This discussion came up yesterday, when on the mountain with a large group of members and two newlyweds.  The bride said, “This is amazing, I’ve never seen anything like this.  It’s beautiful,” just before getting into van, having one last taste of the scene surrounding her.  I could tell she didn’t want to let it go.

Paid yesterday from SRJC.  Much of the money, already allocated.  Setting some aside for 2013’s whoso wines.  Thinking I’m only going to do 1 barrel.  Chardonnay maybe?

Making mySelf go by that Art supply store in Montgomery Village.  Going to play with colors, like Troy, my friend Melissa’s husband suggested.  Want my life enveloped by Art, knowledge.  Started researching some things yesterday, about France, its history.  Didn’t know the country has experienced–  But if I go to that store, that takes time away from my book work.  And the money I’d spend, away from Self-printing.. still undecided about my prospective drawing pieces.  But in these lines, I’m forever assured.  I never question whether I should write.  I’m always writing.  Right now.

Little Jack, close to walking.  Difficulty keeping up this morning, only as I needed just a brush more sleep [interesting I used “brush”..].  And, the writer hasn’t had his coffee.  But, Alice is bringing me, ever kindly as she is, the famous morning mocha, so needed by Mike Madigan’s manuscripts.  Wonder what would happen, how my character would change if I cut out caffeine.  I keep saying I want, NEED, newness.  Maybe that’s a place to start.  Should definitely do so with wine…

Topped both my barrels, yesterday.  And relating it to the drawing, or painting.. I’d devote funds, energy, to winemaking before I would Art, drawing, I feel.  Is that wrong, or is that what I should follow?

***

Not overthinking.  Illegal in my writing’s immediacy.  If there’s no bigger table available at 12 & Mission, I’m heading to the office.  I do like the isolationist feel of that little enclosure.  My number one objective, today: ADD to BOOK.  Could be doing that right now, with little Kerouac finally down for his afternoon siesta.  Time, 12:35p.  Was just thinking about the vineyards, where they are in their stages.  We have seen some buds breaking around the estate, higher elevations, western and southern facing.  Definitely some of the buds pushing, at the very least.  Again, relating this to my life as a writer, just as I did last year, at AV Winery, with their estate coming to life.  Heading up there Thursday, to pick up shipment.. 3 bottles of ’10 Sophia’s Hillside Cuvée.  Not sure where I’m going to put these newest bottles.  Space for my collection, thinning.  Yet another reason I need a Room of my own.. my office eventual.

Thinking of what to log next.  Here.  Stuck.  Still–  OH.. my photos from the silver memory stick, from when that gentleman on Santa Rosa’s west side retrieved–really RESCUED–hundreds of Jack photos, and other captures, from my deceased phone.  Need to go through those, for writing’s sake but also for the albums I want to put together.  And that, takes time from my manuscripts, these books.  So where would I have time to “draw?” I do want to, if anything just play with colors, pencil and brush movements.  I’m just derangedly protective of my time with page.

Character from work, his intellectual pursuits, motivating me.  Researching France, Art, Wine, Winemaking.  And logging my findings, for example: in researching the Hundred Years War, learned that “chevauchees” translates to “plundering raids.” So much to France’s history, culture, different regions.  And my French word of the day: une friandise, meaning “treat.” Need to intensify my French language research.  Truly immerse mySelf in it, well as the culture.  Still hate that word, “immerse,” though.  “Immersion” as well.  Used, misused, over-misused at the box.  But I don’t want those oozing warts in this entry, or around my Art and cultural concernments.

Paintings, from Orsay.. on brain.  Loved walking through those halls, seeing all the Monet’s, Van Gogh’s…  Missing my city.  Time for lunch.

Monet, his obsession with light and objects, possibly relating to this paragraph practice.  Possibly.

Between classes.  Why not write?  Sent 302 to library to research Autobiography; what it entails, how it brings both story, message, meaningfulness; I want them to see it more than just a “genre” or style of writing.  Going to do the same with the 100 students, as they close up “Sun Also Rises.” Adding Hemingway to my research list.  I remember in one of my past Comp Books–the green one I think, from ’09, the one I brought to Paris.. the one I called “Green Mead”–I had an envelope, upon which I had vertically listed interests, or intense interests, or goals.  Can’t quite remember, but I had quite a bit on there.  Starting another, on one of the copies of a past typed lecture.  Done.  Has 4 items.  Only writing on 1 side.

Starving.  Should have had more to eat, today.  Had Alice’s leftovers from last night’s restaurant.  Felt a little anxiety for last class.  Not sure why.  Had a couple sips of water and it was done.  How odd, though.

Visiting my wines again tomorrow.  Want to meet with winemaker on his thoughts.  We had such a great discussion yesterday, tasting the 2012 Chardonnay as it went through filtration.

8:53pm.  Just put 1029 words into novel.  New words that I just wrote.  What just happened?  How am I not writing for a living, selling my work?  Why aren’t I?  What’s wrong with me?  Never done that before.  Started, 8:20p.  And I just finished.  Over one thousand words in just over 30 minutes.  Kelly, very much to credit for this burst.  Love the quiet of this building, the latter hours.  No students, no snobby full-timers.  Love.

8:55.  Leaving in 5.  Love sittings like this.  These are the ones I remember, that keep me writing.  Walk away from my body, my body of work, knowing I love writing.  The language.. the chase, in my own thoughts, for BOOKS.  Hungry.. extremely.  Need a beer.  To celebrate this session, the 3 pages I just injected into my rebuilt book.

NOTES:  wines, visit tomorrow; taste through what’s poured in TR, see if there’s some character type you want in your ’13 wine(s); write in Comp Book when home, spoken word.. MORE POETRY; download music, new songs for office not that distant; go through little pages, look for gems; return to 1st blog, look for gems; keep “the box” in scope.
